Ingredients:
- 1.25 cups all-purpose flour
- 0.5 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 0.25 tsp salt
- 4 tbsp ice water
- 4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 0.25 cup granulated sugar
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
- 0.25 tsp salt
- 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions:
- Prepare the dough by cutting cold butter into flour and salt until crumbly; add ice water until the dough just holds. Roll out to fit a 9-inch plate, prick the bottom with a fork, and bake at 425°F (218°C) for 8 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, sugar, and cornstarch. Pour the mixture into the par-baked crust, spreading evenly.
- Stir together sweetened condensed milk and melted butter. Whisk in eggs one by one, then add vanilla, nutmeg, and salt. Pour the mixture slowly over the apples.
- Combine flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the streusel. Rub in the cold butter with fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, then sprinkle evenly over the custard layer.
- Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35–40 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown, the streusel is toasted, and the center has a slight jiggle.
