Ingredients:

  • 1.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp ice water
  • 4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough by cutting cold butter into flour and salt until crumbly; add ice water until the dough just holds. Roll out to fit a 9-inch plate, prick the bottom with a fork, and bake at 425°F (218°C) for 8 minutes.
  2. In a medium bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, sugar, and cornstarch. Pour the mixture into the par-baked crust, spreading evenly.
  3. Stir together sweetened condensed milk and melted butter. Whisk in eggs one by one, then add vanilla, nutmeg, and salt. Pour the mixture slowly over the apples.
  4. Combine flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the streusel. Rub in the cold butter with fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, then sprinkle evenly over the custard layer.
  5. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35–40 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown, the streusel is toasted, and the center has a slight jiggle.
